The benefits of BTR are well known, homes are delivered far quicker than build to sell, which is limited by absorption rates, and the scale of BTR developments enables places to be created, areas to be regenerated and communities to be formed. It also offers an opportunity for urban intensification as part of the regeneration process.
BTR is now recognised as a catalyst for unlocking mixed use developments, co-locating with offices, industrial space, being integrated into the high street as part of its transformation. So how will this work? What are the challenges? What’s fundable? What is the potential? What can it deliver?
We have assembled a first class panel to discuss this opportunity. Richard Jackson, Apache Capital was an early mover in the BTR market, will provide the investors perspective. Rebecca Lewis, Morgan Sindall experienced in BTR, will give us the developer’s insight. And, Russell Pedley, Assael, has been behind the design of numerous major BTR schemes, and will provide us with a designer’s perspective. Finally, Stephanie Barbabosa, LendLease, with massive multi-family experience in the US, will moderate the session and add her own views.

Russell Pedley
Director & Co-Founder
Assael Architecture

Russell is Director and Co-Founder of Assael Architecture. With over 30 years as an architect and 15 years in urban design, he has a strong passion for creating a sense of place with historical and cultural connections in all of his work.

Following years of research, including many study trips to the US, and producing design guides for the UK, Assael is now one of the leading architects in the sector, paving the way with key projects such as Union Wharf in Greenwich for Essential Living, Blackhorse Mills in Walthamstow for Legal & General, and Pontoon Dock in Newham for Linkcity. Russell also co-authored both editions of the Urban Land Institute’s Build to Rent: A Best Practice Guide, which was sponsored by the British Government, and he is now Chair of the ULI’s UK Residential Council and advises on MHCLG’s Build to Rent Joint Committee.
